Great Ormond St “Parchment” was chosen for a period style bedroom feature wall in Fishponds, Bristol. To prepare for wallpapering the walls were cross-lined with lining paper. Cross lining the walls is recommended by the manufacturer because it provides a good base for wallpapering. We always recommend cross lining to guarantee the best results. The wallpaper is hung with standard ready mixed wallpaper adhesive. Applying paste to the paper in the traditional way. This classic historic design from the London Wallpapers Collection makes a statement in any period home and Little Greene wallpaper is a pleasure to work with.

Repeat customers in Downend asked me to redecorate their bedroom recently. Laura Ashley Hydrangea Camomile wallpaper was choosen for their bedroom feature wall. The walls in this typical early 1930’s home in Downend were in fairly poor condition. Cabot Decorating recommended cross lining with a good quality lining paper to provide a smooth surface for painting and wallpaper.

As professional decorators we know good preparation is the key to quality painting and decorating. Preparing damaged surfaces, making good imperfections and sanding down are all part of the process of achieving professional results. Inevitably this can lead to excessive dust particles in and around the work area particularly in older properties.

Dust free sanding with Cabot Decorating

Cabot Decorating regularly use dust free orbital sanders from Mirka. A range of innovative compact electric random orbital sanders. Lightweight but powerful combined with a hard wearing net abrasive called Abranet. Especially designed for efficent sanding and dust extraction Abranet has literally 1000’s of tiny holes that allow the dust produced to pass through it. When our sanders are connected to a high powered industrial vacuum extractor virtually all dust produced is safely removed before it can enter the environment. The Mirka dust extractor is specifically designed to work in harmony with Mirka orbital sander. When used together they can reduce harmful dust by up to 95% providing superior surface preparation and a virtually dust free environment.

Pine Kitchen Makeover

I was recently emailed photos of a customers gloomy 1980’s pine kitchen. To save on an expensive replacement they were considering refurbishing their existing solid pine cupboards. The customers arranged for replacement beech worktops and sink. Cabot Decorating completed the kitchen makeover with a traditional hand painted finish. Paint coatings usually fail due to poor preparation. That’s why the right preparation is key to professional hand painted finishes especially when painting old kitchens.

The Right Preparation

The kitchen was washed down to remove any traces of grease that could effect paint adhesion. Thoroughly sanded down with two coats of Zinsser BIN primer applied to the pine knots. Cover Stain a fast drying high adhesion primer was used to provide a tough substrate for painting. Up to three coats of Almond White Dulux Trade Eggshell paint were applied. Carefully rubbing down between coats with fine grade sandpaper. Wiping down surfaces with tack clothes to remove any any dust is essential. When the painting was finished it was allowed to hardened for a few days before refitting the doors, drawers and new handles to finish off this pine kitchen makeover.
